our Story

once upon a time...

Stagecraft  are one of ireland’s best youth theatres. we are constantly raising the bar, bringing new, innovative theatre to tipperary.

Stagecraft offer drama classes to young people aged five - twenty . Our classes cover theatre, acting, musical theatre, voice, improvisation, performance, confidence building and so much more. Our classes focus on young people learning the best theatre skills, becoming more confident and making friends. Each year our groups perform in full scale theatre productions, usually in May.

Over the last twenty years we have played a major role in the lives of young people in South Tipperary. We are one of the largest youth theatre’s of our kind in Ireland. To date we have produced over 90 full-scale theatre productions (12 of which have been Irish Premiers) and have run over 4000 workshops and rehearsals. Stagecraft is affiliated to Youth Theatre Ireland who are the development organisation responsible for   youth theatre/drama in Ireland.

Stagecraft aims to provide the highest standards of professional theatre training for young people. As well as providing workshops in all aspects of theatre & film practice we continue to produce, at present, a minimum of four theatre productions per year. These productions allow the members an ideal opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired in our workshops to an exciting theatre production. Our artistic policy has and continues to support the development of new writers and has staged works from writers such as Lee Mattinson, Alex Jones, Jack Thorne, Moira Boffini, Gina Moxley, Hannah Burke, Jim Daly and Sam Greene. These artists continue to make a significant contribution to the new writing for theatre, film and radio.

Stagecraft has an honourable tradition of older members returning to share their skills with less experienced younger members. Guest workshop leaders include, Eamon O Hagen, Chris Meads, Brian Astbury, Richard Hay, Patricia O Meara and International playwrite and actor George Seremba. Our honourary patron is Mary Cummins, sadly Mary passed away in 2012 and is a continuous inspiration to our work and ethos.
