Now booking for Shakespeare Master classes.
As part of the many events that will take place to celebrate the 10th
anniversary of Stage Craft Youth Theatre. They have invited Manchester based
theatre director Chris Meads to run a weekend master class on
approaches to acting Shakespeare in Clonmel Resource Centre on Saturday
24 and Sunday 25 November. This is the first time that the company are
offering places to adults in their workshops. Between now and June
Stage Craft will be hosting numerous week-end master classes led by the
most innovative theatre practitioners.
Chris Meads was winner of the Channel 4 Directors programme and has
been working at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre since 2006.
Recently he was assistant director on the following Royal Exchange
productions: Mary Barton, Love and Money (co-production with Young
Vic), Cyrano De Bergerac, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Tempest,
Henry V. He was invited on to the 2006 National Theatre Studio
Director’s Programme. He also worked as assistant director to Max
Stafford-Clark and Ian Rickson at The Royal Court, London. He was
recipient of the Northern Arts/Royal Shakespeare Company directing
bursary to work alongside Michael Boyd in Stratford-Upon-Avon. He
initiated cross-arts research development projects involving dance and
film practitioners. (Funded by organisations such as the Prince's Trust
and Northern Film and Media). He is a regular visiting director and
acting tutor at E-15 Acting School, London and has led workshop
auditions in London and New York. He has thought theatre at University
level, specialising in acting approaches to Shakespeare, contemporary
text and ensemble work.
Stage Craft’s artistic director explained why the company has taken
this initiative:
‘…Training is a huge part of any actor’s life and we all constantly
seek out new working methods. This hunger for greater understanding is
never ending and we all have to work on our skills so that we bring
greater complexity to our work. I personally feel that the cultural
baggage associated with Shakespeare can really put people off and this
is partially to do with the way that it is usually thought in schools.
Sometimes a teacher can really revitalise the students and make the
text accessible but sadly these people are often the exception to the
rule and most people’s thoughts on Shakespeare tend to be negative. The
workshop that we are hosting is purely practical and allows the actors
to get a real sense of the joy of making it seem like the text is being
spoken for the very first time, and that is a huge achievement
considering the plays of Shakespeare are produced more than any other
play write in the history of theatre. I had the pleasure of working
with Chris in London and I have greatly admired his work as director
and indeed as a teacher of acting. We are delighted that we can bring
someone of his calibre to work in Clonmel. It seems like the right time
to broaden our scope and begin to offer further training not just for
young people but for adults alike and we hope this weekend will be the
first of many such ventures in Clonmel…’
